Our History
They say difficult roads often lead to beautiful destinations, and that, sometimes it’s the journey that teaches you a lot about the destination. Our journey has not been easy but the end goal makes it all worth it. The journey may be long, full of adventure, full of struggles. Many may be the challenges, that we may learn from our past and celebrate our success. Ours has been a journey with God.
Our Journey started in the year 2000 when the idea of starting UMOJA WENDANI SACCO was conceived by 11 members of PCEA Umoja Parish Presbyterian Church Men Fellowship (PCMF) with an aim to offer access to credit for members to expand their business as well as improve their economic livelihood. With the Support of the Umoja PCMF members, the Sacco was started and the maiden office was operated by the Board assisted by the PCEA Umoja Church staff.
In the year 2001 the Sacco was officially registered with the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Cooperatives under the Cooperative Societies Act No.12 of 1997, and governed by the SACCO Societies Act and the Sacco by-laws. After registration the Sacco was opened to all church members of PCEA Umoja parish.By the year 2002 the Sacco was gaining popularity and with the numerous enquiries from other P.C.E.A Churches, the Membership opened to other P.C.E.A churches within the Nairobi East region which covers Eastland’s, Ruai Zone and Kangundo.
The following year, the Sacco started giving loans to the members. The benefits of years of Savings were evident and the membership growth gained momentum. Members were encouraged to save regularly and to borrow wisely for their development projects.
In the year 2005, the Sacco had its first AGM and members got the first opportunity to elect the board, pass resolutions and exercise their rights of a membership.
The year 2007 saw the Sacco employ the first employee who took over the vital role of the daily operations of the Sacco. With an office and Staff in place, the Sacco had entered the highway of growth.
Since then, the growth of Umoja Wendani SACCO has been high a fact attributed to good governance, leadership, staff commitment and efficient patronage by members.
Over the years, the Sacco has grown tremendously and moved to a bigger office, hired more staff, started the registration of groups as well as opening the common bong to all citizens within the Christian community. We have learnt from our past, we live the moment to empower communities economically and socially, as we prepare for the future.
